Painting of Bodhidharma at Himeji Castle
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodhidharma#Nine_years_of_wall-gazing |
One man stares at a TV
wanting to see what's happening
with the world.
One man looks out the windows
to do the same.
One man gazes into a mirror to see himself
but then he's startled
because he sees other stuff, too.
One man sees God in the face of a Dog
because words are like mirrors, too.
One man asks his friends what he looks like
so he can see himself
as others see him.
One man says, when asked what the future will bring:
“i don't have a crystal ball.”
One man has a crystal ball
but he's a mute.
How come one man can see the light
of an August afternoon
brightening the geraniums redder,
marigolds yellow-goldener―
yet another man doesn't see it.
One man, Bodhidharma, from India,
is said to have gone inside a cave
and faced a wall for nine years, without speaking―
what he experienced founded Chan Buddhism in China
and from there, Zen in Japan.
When one man heard about that
he turned off the TV,
closed the windows,
cleaned his mirror,
and went to bed.
At daybreak
one man sees the future
in a bead of dew
in the morning light
in a meadow
in a world that is on fire
in a world that is melting
in a world that is begging
for true vision.
