Soraya Serajeddini
Sign Book of Condolences
KurdishMedia.com joins all Kurds and friends of Kurdistan worldwide in expressing sorrow at the recent passing of Soraya Serajeddini and heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.

Kurds and their friends worldwide have joined together in mourning the tragic and untimely passing of Soraya, one the US’ most prominent and dedicated Kurdish activists. The outpouring of grief following the sad news of her passing and concurrent recognition of her accomplishments and selfless dedication to Kurdistan is a testament to her impact on the Kurdish community worldwide.

Soraya was a dedicated pan-Kurdish activist, and her efforts and energy crossed all of the various boundaries that exist among the Kurdish nation. In March of this year, she took an active role in the Democracy in Syria and Kurdish Human and National Rights conference in Washington, DC, chairing a number of panel discussions at this landmark event. Her pan-Kurdish sentiments and efforts were evident in her dedicated service as a leading member of the Kurdistan National Congress of North American (KNC). Following the initial success of the Syrian Kurdish coalition building effort, she assumed the role of leader in an effort to build a coalition among the various Kurdish parties of Iran, her birthplace, and worked to promote cooperation between the Kurdish and non-Kurdish opposition movements in Iran. Her efforts as the Director of the Kurdish American Committee for Democracy in Iran laid the groundwork for building a united platform among the various ethnic groups in Iran and joining forces to fight for freedom and democracy in the country.

Soraya was indefatigable; year after year she was driven only to work harder and harder. She was elected Executive Vice President of the KNC this year, just months before assuming the role of Director of the Kurdish American Committee for Democracy in Iran. At the same time, she was working on a book which sought to introduce the Kurdish issue to the American public and had already drafted a book proposal and outline for this project.

Even those who never had the opportunity to meet Soraya know of her work and cite her untimely passing as a loss to the Kurdish nation and cause. Those who worked with her directly could not help by being struck by her knowledge and energy. Anyone who had the opportunity to know Soraya on a personal level also knew her as a kind and fun person with an amazing sense of humor.

The KurdishMedia.com staff who had the honor of knowing Soraya will remember her not only as a dedicated patriot but also as a dear friend. We join our brothers and sisters worldwide, Kurds and friends of Kurdistan, in remembering Soraya and being thankful of the opportunity to know her and work with her and see the results of her dedication to her nation. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this time. Her memory is a blessing and inspiration to us all.
