It is only a short time until construction begins on the Nicaraguan Canal. This is intended to be a benefit to Nicaragua as well as to the primary financiers of the project, China.

As should be expected, there are varying views on whether this is good for Nicaragua. In the article we published on December 11 by Stephen Sefton - 'Who's afraid of the Nicaraguan Canal?', the case for the benefits is made. That article also linked to another piece by Tortilla con Sal (Nicaragua's Canal, shallow science and phony environmentalism) which adds further to Mr Sefton's article.

We at Axis of Logic take the same position as Mr Sefton and Tortilla con Sal and we are pleased to highlight a comment from reader 'Eddy', who writes:
Clearly, sounds to me, that there is more then a hint of panic in the opposition to this proposal. I'm quietly confident the Chinese have done their sums, otherwise they wouldn't be offering to build this canal in the first place. Also, comparing the Panama canal and the attitude of the builders/planners etc. who built that canal are a direct contradiction to this proposal. Let's face it, where was the environment studies done back then? LOL. And who gave rats about the locals back then either? To now stand on your soap box and condemn this project when the Panama project rode roughshod over the local population is a bit like the Pot Calling The Kettle Black, IMHO, not to mention the sour grapes of the loss of income for the later when this new canal comes on stream.
Well said, Eddy.
