US Attack to Stop the Venezuelan-Iranian Recovery of Gasoline Production Printer friendly page Print This

Venezuela's Amuay Refinery, the largest in the country, was attacked again two days ago on October 27. It was without doubt strategic in the lead-up to both the US election next week, as Trump tries to impress the Cuban and Venezuelan radicals in Florida and to punish the Venezuelan people here for voting in our own national elections on December 10.

[See also October 30 news report here.]

The attack at Amuay was either executed directly by the US military or their regional mercenaries. The same refinery was destroyed in 2012 killing 55 people and injuring 156 civilians living nearby and members of the National Guard.

This time they attacked the refinery just as we are beginning to see the very gradual but regular delivery of gasoline at the pumps and the days-long queues diminishing very gradually. My friend Alvaro and his son waited in queue an incredible 17 days, sleeping in their cars at night to fill their taxis (their only means of income) with gas. My friend Juan Carlos, a manager for national coffee distribution 10 days earlier this month and I had to drive 45 km to Los Teques to buy 30 litres (less than 8 gallons), an all day endeavor, last week.

The weapon used in the attack 4 weeks ago smacks of a military operation to stop the very gradual but successful recovery of the refineries with Iranian help.

President Maduro was blunt:
"Maduro pointed out the refinery was attacked with a powerful long weapon because the explosion knocked down a tower with a thickness of steel greater than a war tank."
Meanwhile, US corporate news and Reuters blames the Chávez and Maduro governments for Venezuela's gasoline crisis:
"The OPEC nation's once-formidable 1.3 million bpd refining network is mostly halted due to years of underinvestment and mismanagement, contributing this year to acute fuel shortages across Venezuela."
