This expression of intention came to be a joke in the United Kingdom after its use by John Major when, as British Prime Minister and having taken over the habit of sleaze in the Conservative Party left to him by Margaret Thatcher, he wanted to improve political life in Britain and Northern Ireland. The cause of the hilarity was the revelation of his extra-marital affair with Edwina Curry, a fellow Conservative Member of Parliament, and a former Minister.
This does not make it any the less a good idea to go back to basics, if by that one means a return to decency and honesty in politics.
There was a time when the election of Barack Obama seemed to herald just such a return, but he soon ended that happy idea by swearing allegiance to a foreign entity through its lobby organisation, the AIPAC.
We were disappointed, to put it politely, by this denial of justice, decency and honesty, but we must quite simply continue our battle against injustice and in favour of going back to basics.
